Two hours later, two men sat on the mess decks, each with a cup of coffee. Senior Chief Morris Lester sat across from RM2 Clay Young. Anyone looking at them would have assumed they were just shooting the shit.

“Were you able to follow Matt today?” Lester asked Clay.

“Yeah. A strange thing happened that doesn’t make sense,” Clay responded, “I was following him and could have sworn he was trying to lose me like he was aware he was being followed. He lost me for a moment, and we accidentally bumped into one another as we each turned a corner. He said he was going to the uniform shop but was walking in the opposite direction. When I pointed that out, he headed out that way and then back-tracked to the Petty Officer’s Club.”

“OK, that’s strange.” Lester paused for a moment, considering this bit of information. “But it’s not in and of itself enough to take action. It’s just one more chip on the table.”

“Well, how about this then,” said Clay. “I tailed him to the club, and he had a beer with a lady-friend that works in Yokosuka. I met her there, and she said she was a civilian employee. I can’t understand why she would be in Subic.”

“Well,” the senior chief pondered, “She could have a job that requires travel around the Seventh Fleet bases.” He paused and thought for a moment before speaking. “OK, the chips are starting to add up.” The senior chief sat silently for a moment and then smiled. “Let’s just assume he’s intentionally sniffing our assholes. Poker isn’t just played at the table. It can be played here in real life. And I’m going to outplay him. Let’s raise the stakes a bit. I think it’s time for a compartment-wide locker search.”
